About The Festival
The London East Asia Film Festival was established in 2015 as a non-profit arts organisation to champion the growing collaboration and diversity in East Asian filmmaking.
After an incredibly successful pre-festival in 2015, LEAFF’s 1st edition officially launched in 2016 on 20th October at ODEON Leicester Square with THE AGE OF SHADOWS (dir. Kim Jee-woon). 40 films were screened over 11 days at venues across central London, and ended with Closing Gala film, THREE (dir. Johnnie To).
LEAFF aims to champion the growing collaboration in East Asian filmmaking with a philosophy that marks a shift in the cinematic landscape of East Asia, and moves away from cultural and cinematic borders. Our vision is to bring a much wider, eclectic, and diverse programme of films from over 10 countries to show the richness and diversity of the region and its people. We want to draw people in with the familiar, and offer opportunities to see something new.
Message from the director
The 2017 London East Asia Film Festival (LEAFF) is the largest film festival of its kind in London, introducing the diversity of East Asian culture though film. Our world needs, more than ever before, a medium to bridge cultural understanding. There is no better way than through film. LEAFF represents a culmination of the most inspiring, engaging and inclusive cross-cultural programming.
Building from our successes in 2015 and 2016, LEAFF is delighted to be back in London. As a global hub, it represents the perfect Western gateway to show films from all over East Asia, appreciating the rich diversity of a region bubbling with creativity and renewal.
We will show both the global blockbusters in Asian cinema, as well as emerging talent of the future, and highlight the strength of contemporary East Asian filmmaking on the world stage.
Join us, and thousands of other directors, artists and supporters at the heart of London to enjoy world class films, participate in workshops and seminars with industry leaders, and even meet your favourite directors and actors.
We look forward to seeing you at the largest ever LEAFF yet!
Hyejung Jeon, Festival Director
