A wonderful example of the versatility and inventiveness of Japanese animators, Kon and his team at Madhouse Studio's celebration of cinematic illusionism became the first anime to be picked up for widespread international distribution by Steven Spielberg's company Dreamworks, with the film also wining the Best Animation Film and Fantasia Ground-Breaker awards at the 2001 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.
